“Lorem ipsum” is the start of a block of text used by publishers for over 500 years as dummy text to check their layouts. Because of the similarity in character use and word length to english, all the spacing and letter frequency is similar, so gives us a chance to look at the layout accurately without being distracted by words we might recognise.
The standard Lorem Ipsum passage, used since the 1500s
I have recently made a plugin for Sublime Text 2 called LoremIpsum which allows you to easily insert randomised words from the standard paragraph into your code. For the sake of tradition, each generated sentence starts with “Lorem ipsum” and then is generated at a random length (within 50% of specified size, measured in words). I don’t have any immediate plans to add functionality to the plugin, but if I was to make one improvement, it would be to add at least one of every letter to each generated output, to allow for testing fonts.
